PADI IDC program and structure
The PADI IDC I teach is the new Instructor Development curriculum released in 2020, ensuring that your PADI PRO instructor training is the latest up to date and state of the art training available.
How is the PADI IDC structured?
The PADI IDC is structured into different segments:
Classroom segment
Here we go over dive theory development and ensuring that your level of understanding of the dive theory is that of what is expected from a PADI OWSI (Open Water Scuba instructor). The theory sections include:
Dive Physics
Dive Physiology
The Recreational Dive Planner (Dive Tables)
Skills and Environment
Dive Equipment
For some self study of these subjects ensure that you are up to date by visiting the Get Prepared section of this website. In additions to ensuring that your dive theory is where it needs to be during the classroom sessions we will be learning how to present knowledge review presentations.
You will also dissect and become very familiar with the PADI Instructor manual by diving into every course that you will be able to teach once successfully passed the PADI IE.
Confined water segment (pool sessions)
I try to ensure that we hit the pool everyday during the IDC program. During the confined water sessions we will practice the PADI 24 skills circuit ensuring that your skills are up to demonstration style quality.
You will learn how to present confined water presentations, that is fancy talk for teaching you how to teach open water course skills to your students. You will learn how to conduct a good and descriptive briefing which includes values, descriptions and conduct just to mention a few items.
You will learn how to problem solve whilst we are role playing with other candidates who are pretending to be open water students. Your fellow candidates will be assigned problems and you will learn how to deal and correct these problems.
You will practice rescue skills which you learned in your Rescue Course and repeated in your PADI Divemaster Course. In particular we will be concentrating on Rescue skill number 7 from the rescue course which is how to deal with an unconscious non breathing diver found at the surface. We will practice this skill over and over with mouth to mouth and pocket mask until mastery is achieved as this is one of the Rescue skills which will be tested in the PADI IE.
Openwater segment
During the open water segment we will practice dive skills as well as present skills from the open water course and from other continuing education courses:
Demonstrate role model demonstration of a simulated unconscious diver at the surface
Surfacing and unresponsive non breathing diver
Exiting the diver
Administer first aid
Administer oxygen using a rescue mask
Openwater presentations from the PADI Openwater course and from other continuing education courses
Discover Scuba Diving workshop
Advanced Course workshop
Deep Diver assessment workshop
Controlled Emergency Swimming Ascent workshop (CESA)
IE assistance
The padi instructor examination (IE)
The PADI IE is conducted by instructor examiners who work for PADI. These PADI PRO’s are amazing people whose job is to ensure that you understand how the PADI diver education system works. They are not scary monsters, but really amazing PADI professionals who will help and guide you as much as they can to assist you in passing the PADI IE
The PADI IE consists of:
Dive theory exams, covering physics, physiology, skills and environment, scuba equipment and the RDP
Standards and procedures exam (Open book exam)
Knowledge review presentation (Classroom teaching presentation)
Confined water presentation and skill circuit demonstration
Openwater presentation (Can be from open water or other continuing education scuba dive courses)
Rescue demonstration
These are the three parts to becoming a PADI Pro
PADI elearning
You will have to complete the PADI elearning section of the PADI IDC prior to the start of the course.
